How to convert salary to an hourly rate

Divide annual salary by paid weeks in the year, then divide that weekly amount by contracted weekly hours. The default uses 52 paid weeks and 37.5 hours, but those are inputs, not assumptions you have to accept.

Formula: annual salary ÷ paid weeks ÷ weekly hours = gross hourly rate.

Why contracted hours matter

Two salaries can look equal but pay very differently per hour. A £36,000 job at 37.5 hours for 52 weeks works out differently from the same salary over a shorter paid year or a different contracted week. Change the hours before comparing an offer, overtime rate or part-time arrangement.

Gross hourly rate is not take-home hourly pay

This converter gives a gross rate. To estimate the amount after Income Tax, NI, pension and student loan, use the take-home pay calculator. To work from an offered hourly rate in the other direction, use hourly to salary.

Salary to hourly questions

Should I use 52 or 52.142 weeks?

Use the paid weeks specified by the contract. The default of 52 gives a simple annual comparison; some payroll or hourly-rate conventions use a different basis.

Does unpaid overtime change the result?

Yes. Enter your actual weekly hours to see the effective gross hourly rate when you regularly work additional unpaid hours.

Does this include holiday pay?

It assumes the annual salary covers the paid weeks entered. Check the employment contract if holiday treatment is unclear.
